How about:

A surprise party?

An all expense paid trip to the Carribean

Play off tickets to a Leaf game

or!!

A signet ring

A shopping spree for stuff he needs before he goes away

a laptop with wireless that he can take with him so he can keep in touch

hope that gives you some ideas!

Congrats to the lad

Wink

I like the watch idea that is a good one.
A party is also nice, having certain family/friends there to help him celebrate(and likely bring him gifts)
What are his hobbies??
Perhaps ya could base the gift around that.
Example, if he likes to golf,,,,set up a day/weekend for him to play golf during the day, and dinner party at night.
I agree about a nice vacation....somewhere he has wanted to go......something tropical?
Not sure how much $$ you wanted to spend but there are some great "all inclusive" vacations out there.
hmmmmmmmmm, i need to think on it more and
, looks at the time and needs more sleep*L*
we'll come up with something........i still like the watch idea

I tend to like to give gifts that are 2 sided.

Practical and sentimental.

Something fun...and well deserving after 12 years in HS...and then something significant...that the person can keep ( and maybe not even really cherish until they are old ) and sentimental.

Watch - niiiiice
a ring.... also very nice...

***** a piece of art? a framed and matted oer piece of sculpture something significant? Maybe won't mean anything to someone 17 or 18...but wait til you get your own place...or home...and whoa....

a nice picture frame.... a g. certificate for a family portrait... ( you can never have enough moments captured )

hmm...scratches head and thinks
